Mountain biking has arrived
on St. Croix and is a fun way to explore
the island. You can rent bicycles, along
with safety gear, in Frederiksted for a
full or half day. Guided tours of the West
End are also offered; highlights include
the "rain forest," historic landmarks
and lots of tropical flora and fauna. On
a full-day trip, you’ll enjoy a typical
West Indian lunch and time to relax on the
beach.
Nestled in the lush interior
hills of northern St. Croix, Carambola Golf
Course is set amid palms, bougainvillea
and hibiscus. As designed by the famed architect
Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the 6,856-yard,
par 72 course features many challenging
uphill and over-water shots, particularly
on the tricky par 3 holes. Mid island, The
Buccaneer Golf Course is a first-rate par
71 course. Its hilly 6,268 yards wind dramatically
along the ocean. The Reef Golf Course is
a fun 9-hole course set in a valley on the
east end of the island. It’s 2,700
yards offers panoramic ocean views and an
awesome view of Buck Island.
The best courts on
St. Croix are at private clubs, which require
reservations and a modest fee. The Buccaneer
has eight championship courts open to the
public, along with a well-equipped pro shop
and an experienced pro who gives lessons.
Private courts are also available at Carambola,
Chenay Bay, Colony Cove, Mill Harbor, Tamarind
Reef Hotel, The Reef and Cormorant Beach
Club & Hotel. Public courts are available
at Canegata Ball Park, just east of Christiansted.
