Governor Charles W. Turnbull, Chairman of the Board of
the Public Finance Authority announced that as part of
the Frederiksted Economic Revitalization Project, construction
at the Vincent Mason Pool Resort, Verne I. Richards Veterans
Park, Strand Street, Eliza McBean Clock Tower and the
Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility will commence Thursday,
May 6, 2004.
The work by Coastal
Systems Development, Inc., the design-build firm responsible
for project implementation, will include the demolition
of the existing restroom and the construction of new
restroom facilities and other amenities to improve the
accommodations to the public. Additionally the Veteran's
Park will also undergo major revitalization. Construction
on Strand Street will be carefully managed to minimize
the impact to traffic flow and local business.
In order to commence construction
closing of both the Vincent Mason Pool Resort and Veterans
Park for the duration of construction is necessary.
Project completion is expected the end of the year 2005.
Governor Turnbull noted that the Public
Finance Authority sponsored a community charrette in
October 2002 to examine the revitalization of the town
of Frederiksted through a focus on public spaces and
the creation of unique experiences that would serve
to attract world wide visitors, cruise ships, boaters
and new residents. "As I promised the business
men and women and the people of St. Croix, I would do
all within my power to develop this island into a world
recognized visitor destination, promoting our rich culture,
vibrant history and unique architecture. We are breaking
ground on Thursday, May 6th, 2004 to begin actual construction
on this long awaited, worthwhile and truly exciting
project." Governor
Turnbull said.
