The Frederiksted
Design Charrette, sponsored by the Virgin
Islands Public Finance Authority (VIPFA),
was the first initiative to examine the revitalization
of the communities and the economy of St.
Croix. The initial focus was the town of Frederiksted
and its cruise ship industry. To accomplish
this task, a design charrette was held, which
is an intensive design session bringing together
the local residents with top planning and
design professionals in a collaborative "hands-on"
planning session. The charrette was held in
Frederiksted, St. Croix, from October 16-18,
2002.
The town of Frederiksted has a unique
history and architecture
that sets it apart from other Caribbean destinations.
Therefore, the focus of the charrette was
to enhance and showcase these attractions,
